- Your system is 15-20 years old.
Heating systems are built to last about 15-20 years. Air conditioning systems have a shorter lifespan with just 10-15 years. If your system falls into these age ranges, chances are, it’s time to replace them.
- Your system is failing to keep your home at your desired temperature.
If you find that your system isn’t hitting your desired temperature, or set point, the first thing you want to do is check your air filter and make sure it’s clean. If your air filter is in good condition, and your system still isn’t reaching your desired set point, then you should have it looked at by a professional. This could simply be a sign that your thermostat needs to be replaced. Or, it could mean a bigger issue, like your HVAC system is overheating, which means it needs maintenance or to be replaced entirely.
- Your air is drier than usual.
Another sign of a failing HVAC system or one that needs a tune up is drier air. However, if you notice your air is drier than usual, and your HVAC system doesn’t need any maintenance, it might be time to consider using a humidifier. Check out our recent post: “What Is a Humidifier and Why Do You Need One in the Winter?” to learn how putting a humidifier in your home can help alleviate many ailments during the winter months.
- Your system is making funny noises.
If you are hearing funny noises, like grinding, squealing, or rattling, coming from your HVAC unit, you should definitely have it looked at to make sure a part hasn’t broken or fallen loose.
- Your system randomly turns on or off throughout the day, or it isn’t turning on or off at the right time.
If you find that your HVAC system randomly turns itself on or off throughout the day, or it isn’t turning on or off at the time you set it to, call a technician right away. This could be a sign that there is something going on with your power supply, and if not corrected, this could cause damage to your home. This could also be a sign that your system is overheating, which could lead to a fire if not rectified.
If your air filter is clean, but you are still having any of these HVAC issues, don’t hesitate! It’s better to do something right away, rather than wait and run the risk that your system stops working completely. Get ahold of a technician to see if your HVAC system needs maintenance or to see if you need to get a whole new system.
